Inka Wayra

Andres Alvarez
Andres Alvarez - Charrango.
-The director of the band, he had the dream and the determination to create "Inka Wayra". He searched for over a year to find 3 other gentlemen who could share his vision, and make it a realization. He is from Lima, Peru.
Patricio Bedon
Patricio Bedon - Vientos (wind instruments) and Violin
Patricio has a great talent for the violin, which is used in a couple of the songs that we play. He is from Quito, Ecuador. As said before, he, Carlos, and Andres all have known each other for many years, as have they played together.
Carlos Diaz
Carlos Diaz - Vientos and Bombo.
Carlos is originally from Trujillo, Peru (north of Lima); but has spent many years playing with various groups throughout South America. He, Andres, and Patricio all knew each other from the time they played together with the group Urpillao in Colombia and Venezuela. When the group separated, some went to Europe and others went to the U.S.
Pedro Maldonado
Pedro Maldonado - Guitar
Pedro comes to us from Puerto Valparaiso, Chile. He had always the desire to play Andean music, he learned on his own through the observation and appreciation of acquaintances that he has met while in the United States. With his background and experience in guitar, he has had no problem mastering the Andean sound.
As our 2003 touring year gets under way, we would just like to thank everyone for their support of the music and for opportunities which have opened up for Inka Wayra since our move to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex.

About the instruments:

Most of the instruments used by the Andean bands are the originals from the time of the Inca people, thousands of years ago. Some more contemporary instruments may be used also depending, group to group; the guitar and synthetic keyboards are examples of later added instruments. The "flutes" and the "drums" were the actual 1st instruments of the ancient Inka. When the Spanish conquered the Andes and the Inka empire they brought with them different, more contemporary, instruments like the guitar, harps, and violins. With time, the people of the Andes learned to adopt these new instruments into their music and lifestyles. The Andean people even created their own instrument, the Charango (little guitar). It was more efficient for the mountain people to carry long distances.

A list of the "traditional" instruments are: -The Quena (flute) is the oldest of the wind instruments; can be made of bamboo or wood. -The Zimpona (pan flutes); also may be called Siku. -The Charango (little guitar); 10 string guitar which can be made of armadillo shells or wood. -The Bombo (Inka drum); a 2 headed drum made from hollow tree trunks with skins stretched across each end. -The Chaccas (rattle); made from goat hooves
