Viento de los Andes plays
traditional music from South America with pecial emphasis on the melodies
and rhythms of Ecuador. The music is played on traditional instruments;
bamboo flutes called samponas and uenas, guitars drums and a small guitar-like
instrument called harrangos
Jose Arciniegas, director of Viento de los Andes was born in Imbabura in Ecuador. He was raised in the small Andean town of Atuntaque near the famous market town of Otovalo where the indian traditions are still strong and viable and where traditional music is heard everywhere. Jose began to play music at the age of ten. He sang played quitar, quena and sampona and serenaded the girls outside their windows with love songs. Jose came to the US as the musical director for a group of indigeous people from the Amazon and began to perform and record his own music in 1991. Jose's high quality recordings are distributed throughout the US, Europe and South America. Jose and his group perform all year throghout the western US and Alaska. Viento de los Andes instrumental music is made up of traditional and original songs which recall the spirit of the Andes and the creative and industrious people who live there.
